Once you are done with your tummy tuck or the abdominoplasty, the next task is to get back on your feet. After the procedure you will be expected to be under medical supervision for around two days. The first thing to recovery after a tummy tuck is to ensure that nothing untoward occurs immediately after the procedure.

In terms of recovery after tummy tuck, your body will need at least seven days to regain a modicum of its original self. You will once again have to visit the doctor at the end of this period to ensure that the healing process is going on fine. Similar check-ups will take place after a month, then three months, half a year and then a year after the procedure has been conducted. This is how long the recovery after tummy tuck can take.

The scar that appears after the surgery is often a small one and not something that you need to worry about. It will be gone before you know it. There will be some expenses involved during the recovery after tummy tuck. You will need to buy analgesics for yourself. Some patients experience a bit of pain after this is administered but this is natural.

The commonly asked question is when can one get back to their normal life? This depends on the healing process and can vary from person to person. In all probability, you will be able to get back to work within a week of the procedure. But make sure that your abdominal area is under no pressure and you do not experience any tightness. You will have to completely avoid exercising. The only thing that you can do is some good amount of walking. This will encourage the blood flow throughout your body and this is essential to the healing process. Recovery after tummy tuck s fairly quick but needs to be done with adequate care.

I am 12 weeks from my tummy tuck surgery and I still can NOT fit into my pre-op pants/jeans. It’s extremely frustrating. My surgeon says that swelling can take up to 12 months to go completely down. I feel like the day I took my binder off I was super thin and now I feel like I don’t look as good. I’ve had my binder off since week 3 when I was told I no longer needed it. I have lost 5 lbs. since my surgery and am extremely frustrated with how things are progressing.

    Hi Ladies,

I just had a tummy tuck 8 days ago, so I’m still wearing my binder and still swollen. However, I had a hysterectomy a few years ago and I also had swelling, which lasted about three months or longer. My doctor did not give me a specific time to lose the binder this time, He said I would know when I no longer needed it, but that I needed to continue with it or with Spanx or something like it.

Remember this is major surgery, so do not expect the swelling to go down in two weeks. Anesthesia, itself, causes swelling; then you also have an incision and possibly work done on the stomach muscle.

By the way, three weeks seems rather soon to take off the binder from what I’ve read at other websites.

HI..I am 13 weeks post tumy tuck. I agree with Dee, i felt better 3 weeks after surgery and felt thinner than i do now. i feel like i can feel a huge amount of fat around my waiste all the time. I feel bloated and the same here my jeans are not comfortable. I wish I knew haow things will end up. I hear it can take a year for everything to settle…I don’t..know I’m frustrated..I’m glad to know there is others who feel the same. I felt like I was doing something wrong!

I am 3 wks post tummy tuck. My doc said to get rid of the binder, but I dont feel ready to. He also said to stop whining and get going. That most are at the gym after a week and back to work after a week. ( I really find that hard to believe – I have no energy – still have lots of swelling, and very much tightness.) He said I was ugly when I came in now he made me beautiful – He may need some work on his bedside manners! I have been sick to my stomach everyday – cant stand to smell or see food. I’ve lost 7 lbs. but that is because I can not eat anything, I’m sure. The way I feel at this point would not recommend a tummy tuck to anyone. I too have have a hysterectomy, and major back surgery in the past. Maybe at 57 I am not healing very fast – I frustrated as will, clothes not fitting well.

I am due to undergo a full tummy tuck anytime now. I say this as such because mine has, unfortunately, been postponed several times. Originally, I was all set to have mine done Dec. 2 or 3, 2010…but an umbilical hernia was found that needed repair and healing time prior to this. O.k., BUMMER, but I got over it! Once I was cleared from everything we expected to do surgery in Feb. or March but other dates with both doctors unfortunately interfered. Finally, was reset for April 14th and less than 24hrs from surgery, when I get a call from my Dr saying that the hospital won’t allow her to do the surgery because she would be without her assistant…SHE WAS PISSED!! She was so mad at them…mainly cause they could have told us the week prior, and she would have made other arrangements to get him here sooner. All in the logistics of things and being part of the medical field myself, I can understand this. She was trying to work with a limited time frame on our part cause my husband had already claimed his vacation time, all three weeks of it, just for me! But, with a little bit of communication on the hospitals part, and this would have been resolved by now and I would be sitting here, right now, recovering instead of whining! Anyway, I go back in today for my weekly weigh-in with hopes for news of new date for next week??? Wish me luck!!

  9. Melissa says:

I can’t believe a doctor would tell a patient that she was ugly and he made her beautiful. Also, a doctor should be somewhat understanding. Everyone heals differently. I had TT 8 days ago and I still hurt and feel like crap. I can’t get my drain tubes removed because I still have too much draining in the right one (hopefully tomorrow or the next day they will come out). My point though is that some people get their tubes removed within a few days and others a couple weeks. We are all different! Please cut yourself some slack and allow yourself to heal. Everyone has told me that w/in time I will be glad I did this but of course right now I have doubts. I just have to remind myself to be patient and take care of myself

Im in great health, strong, 35, athletic but hve that soft belly from babies …. im planning mine for july/august but now I feel leery. Is it worth it to be more confident….all this chat about swellling makes me wonder if all those pics are true……

  12. Steph says:

It will be two month on May 17th and I feel the frustration that you all feel. I still can’t fit into my pants, nor can I fit the next two sizes up from my original post surgery size. I’ve read comments at a few site (you need to visit Realself.com_ it is very helpful- pull up the tummy tuck views), anyway. It is going to take up to at least 3 months for the swelling to go down. I feel at times like my rear has climbed up my back when I put on pants:). Hang in there ladies and so will I.

  13. CAIT says:

@Jag…I am 35 as well and in great shape and healthy. I was left with a saggy tummy after having three children. I am now three weeks post op and doing very well. I stood up straight by the third day post op. After four days I was only taking tylonal occasionaly. One week post op I was walking around the mall. My doctor has told me several times that the reason I healed so well was that I was in such good shape. I am still swollen a little bit but my tummy is flat and I am soo happy. I also did have to have fluid drained with a needle twice, but I wonder if this was because my surgeon choose to only insert one drain because I am small and he took out the drain after one week.
So although some people have a harder time it is not gaurenteed that you will too. I am so glad that I went through with it. I am sure you will be fine.

I saw my regular surgeon today to remove a huge surgicl hernie and I have be in touch with the other surgeon. I say it that wasy because the Dr. doing the plastic surger does not have those extra letter behind his name. He has worked with my regular surgeon for a l ong time. I wonder if I am making a mistake. Is it true that a long curved incision is made at the point of the diafram and lipo occurs and then he pulls the skin down to around my pelvic area where I have a terrific hysterectomy scar. I have had 10 major surgers and the hernia surgery I had last year was worse one. Nobody menntioned tubes just being hunched over for a couple of days. Would any of you be in a p osition to say that having the surgery done that you should havbe opted for a personal trainer 4 days a week. Thanks gals, eveerything was very helpful

Hi! I am 32 and 6 months post-op. I had twins in 2007 and lost 80 pounds after, resulting in alot of loose, saggy skin. To reduce swelling, wear your compression garment 100% of the time and stay away from salty foods….anything prepackaged, breads, etc. Drink lots & lots of water! Lots of fruit & veggies! It gets easier ladies!!

Im 3 wks postop, I feel better everyday:) I had a tummy tuck and liposuction at the same time, it was alot but Praise God im still alive! Im excited for the results as they slowly arrive, my only concern is the swelling between my bellybutton and my tt scar, I try to massage my scar as much as possible even though sometimes it hurts, tingles, or has zingers run through it. Pre op jeans are still alittle sensitive, ok, alot of sensitive around the waist but the more I do the better I feel:) I am scheduled to go back to work tomarrow and im a bit scared because of the physical work but time will tell. Keep your eyes up girls, we all did this for a reason, let’s make the best of it and be patient:)

I would have to say this is the most negative of feedbacks I have seen on a forum. I had my surgery performed on May 24th so 6 days ago, to be honest the first day was great highly drugged. Lol The second day was a little more uncomfortable but not unbearable until I decided to eat Baked Ziti for dinner. I would recommend sticking to a light dinner and meals for the first few days. Nausea and 2 days post op of a tummy tuck are horrendous it is probably the most pain I have every felt. The 3rd day I was a little depressed because I felt bad from the Nausea but went to the doctor and started taking my anti nausea medicine. I felt wonderful on day 4 obviously with the common discomforts. It hurt to walk around for long amounts of time but everyday is progressing so much better I feel better and better everyday. I drink plenty of water through the day I would say 5-6 water bottles a day 16.9 ounces I also drink a glass of something called Emergen-C its 1000mg of Vitamin C just to help with recovery because they say Vitamin C helps with your immune system that also may be why I am not lacking in the energy department. Day 5 and 6 everything is getting better day by day I am hoping to soon have the drainage tube out as I have been 13-14cc the last two days. My swelling does not look bad at all, I put a folded towel on my stomach first with a compression (under Armour) shirt over the towel and the binder on over that. It help with the binder not giving the skin compression lines due to the fact the skin is so impressionable after surgery. I really hope this helps everyone. Having a tummy tuck is no where near the pain level I expected from reading others reviews and watching you tube videos of the surgery being performed. Just remember healing takes time be Patient. It will all be worth it in the end. If your stomach bothered you enough to look into having the surgery performed then there is no way you can be disappointed with the outcome. Good Luck to everyone Stay positive~!~

ok I’m 5 weeks over the surgery and I heal so so fast, the only problem I have is since the wounds close so fast my body couldn’t find the way out of a kind of watery from my tummy so the doctor inserts a kind of a super big seringe (1 ft long) and bring out that water, is like having a ballon filled half of it with water ;( after that I got the whole whole thing lipo at my back, my thights, tummy tuck the whole thing and I’m so happy is just that watery thing, the doctor told me since the beginning he was not getting me thin if I wanted to loose weight I should go to a different surgeon and procedure like the lap band or so… this is cosmetic he said he will set back everything to where it should be but NOT get the weight off, of course you’ll look thin for the water, the grease and the tissue you’ll loose but his words sound right for me, now if the watery thing is not normal and some of you know that or did not have it at all, please let me know I’ll really appreciate it

  20. vero says:

@Nancy Reber I got my hernia treated at the same time my tummy tuck, since plastic surgeon reconstruct the area where the hernia was now yes from belly button down they cut and remove that saggy arez and stitch again so they get rid of that tissue, you get a new belly button, a lot of people complain about swellin but I believe everybody’s body is different I was swollen but not that much now (5 weeks after) my only concern is the drainage thing since I heal so quick that the wounds won’t let that watery thing go out (drain) but the doctor pulls it out with a seringe (you wont feel anything) and very very happy with the results, my doctor is from Chihuahua Mexico and he is so so good plastic surgeon, hope this helps, but have in mind it is a mayor surgery and you can’t get any type of physical activity (train) at least within 6 to 9 months thats what my doctor said.

I am 6 weeks into my abdominalplasty (TT). I am very pleased with the results. I am seeing results everyday. You must remember to stay away from caffine, salt, and sodium. They all cause you to be bloated and swell. Drinking plenty of water is key. I am excited and I have noticed a drop in my dress size. You alos have to waer your compression garment all of the time, until the swelling goes away. My scar is healing and I use Mederma and 100% African Shea Butter. i am very pleased with my progress and would definitely do it again. If you are not satisfied with your porgess you may be doing something wrong!!!!!!!

  22. Juls z says:

I am two days short a week my TT was done, and I must say, I don’t relate to hardly any stories I’ve read. My Doctor warned me about reading comments on line, because some people just like to complain, but, now I must say I some what agree.
I had a full TT and Lipo, I am 42, I’ve had three c-sections, and was in some serious need of tightening, and skin removal. I was not “over weight” going in, just out of shape, in a size 7. I am usually in a size three or five through out my adult life. Well, I was home a few hours after the surgery was done, I walked to our car, got home and slept the rest of the day away. Felt nausea at first, took something for it, and kept up with the the pain meds, and the muscle relaxers, every four hours, needing it, or not. I also started Colace, for constipation a few days before my surgery, because that can sometimes be the worst part. the next morning, I went and had my catheter removed. Everyone in the office kept telling me how great I looked, and I felt okay, so I thanked them. At no time, even immediately after, did I walk hunched over. I have walked straight up, since I came home. (it sounds silly to me that people say that makes it better…how, I wonder?) four days after surgery, I had the drainage tubes removed…the Doctor warned that some people scream, and try to grab him..I felt a pressure, then a release, it was over. It was really not a big deal. The Doctor told me to go to Macy’s or Dillards, and buy some spanx or some kind of more comfortable garment to wear under clothes, which I did…and I haven’t had any drainage from the incision since having the tubes removed. I have my stitches removed one week from tomorrow, then I can resume running 3 weeks after. I am trying to think of any real down side I have experienced since doing this, and I guess the only one is that I am a side sleeper, and I have to sleep on my back for now…went through the same thing in my 30’s with breast augmentation, and I got through it okay.
I really think it’s a true blessing that we have the technology to get back our pre-baby bodies even into our 40’s and 50’s! We only have one go at this thing we call life, make it the best you can! :)

  23. Pam says:

Y’all don’t be scared to have a tummy tuck done. I had one done 5 years ago and my tummy is still flat as a board and the scar is practically invisible. I was 48 when I had it done. Yes, it hurt like hell for along time and yes, I was swollen. It was really a good 6 weeks before I could even consider that I was beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But, like everything that is worth having, you have to suffer a little bit to get it. The main thing is: don’t gain any weight back after the surgery! If you do, you will undo all those positive results and all will be for naught. I continued to lose weight for months after the surgery as swelling went down. Then I lost even more as I wasn’t ashamed to go to the gym and work out in tight clothing. I will say this: I wore that damn constricting garment for months – even after the doc told me I didn’t have to wear it anymore. I would suggest having the surgery done during cold weather months, cuz that thing can sure make you hot! Also, I got Cicca Care for my scar – it really helped out alot in diminishing tghe appearance of the scar.

  24. Paula says:

I’m 3 weeks post-op and feeling pretty good. I had a tummy tuck, lipo and a hernia behind belly button repair at the same time. I was in actual surgery for 8 1/2 hours. The drainage tubes were removed after 10 days. I went back to work last week for a few hours a day. I’m still not standing up straight all day. I start out standing straight and then by the end of the day I have a little swelling and tightness. I’m still wearing the compression garment which I only take off to wash that is when I take my bath or shower. I started walking yesterday for just a short distance. I can’t get in my jeans as of yet but the clothes that I can wear look really good. I can wear the tight fitting exercise clothes and I don’t have all the hang overs. I’m loving it so far. I have lost 9 lbs since before surgery. I would really like to loss 20 more. Now that my tummy is flat my behind is looking a little bigger. I’m hoping that is will come off as soon as I can get back to walking 5 or 6 miles a day. I got to say that my tummy and the scar doesn’t hurt near as much as my back does from being bent over but that is getting better. I also had very dry skin after surgery and was so glad when the doctor told me I could take a bath instead of a shower and I could exfoliate all that dead skin. Good luck to everyone. I hope in a few more weeks I will be back to better than normal.

  25. Lynn says:

I had my surgery on March 2nd, which puts me 15 weeks out. I had 6 different procedures done at this time. Tummy tuck, mastopexy and lipo. I was in surgery for 13 hours. I am a RN and work with my plastic surgeon. I can say now that I am very glad that I had the procedures done but there was a time when I would lay there and think what in the hell have I done to mysef. No matter what you read on here, you will not have a clue until you go through it for yourself.
You go through many different emotions during this time, you will become depressed, regarding pain and swelling. I will never forget how upset I was when I could not fit into any of my clothes. I would cry to my doctor about the swelling and he would say you know that swelling takes time to go away, but I never believed him, cause I wanted for it to go away right now. Everyone thinks that you go in for plastic surgery and you come out looking hotter than hell, reality check it takes time and patience. The Tummy Tuck is a feeling that I will never forget, once the swelling started going away and I was starting to feel better, the tightness at my incision felt so tight, it felt like someone had a thin rope tied around my lower abdomen and kept pulling it tighter and tighter.
I am 15 weeks post op and my tummy is still very tender, when I get in certin positions. But It does get better with time. I am now starting to feel normal again. I will say that the JP drains were the worst things for me, I could not wait to get them out, they hurt everytime that I moved, I had to werar them for a month and half..I was really sick during this time, started running high fevers 103 and 104 about 2 weeks post op. I had aquired the big bad MRSA on top of all of this mess. It was nothing that a 10 days antibiotic would not take care of. It just delayed my healing time. . Today is June 16 and people ask me if it was worth it and if I would do this again and my answer is I’m glad that is is done and over. I love my results of the surgery and my surgeon did a fantastic job. but to say that I would do it all over again knowing what I know now the answer would be no….Its just a long road to go down, worrying and getting depressed regarding everything. I can deal with pain but this was the worst thing in the world that I have ever felt. But if you want this done then it is your decision not anyone elses..Go for it…I’m thankful that I had it done and it is over and I will never go through this again. But if I had not had it done the yes I would still want and go through it…

  26. Libby says:

I had a breast lift with extended TT… on June 7th….the first day I was very nauseated! After that…it was not real bad! I was off my pain meds by the 4th day. My stomach is so flat! I cant hardly believe it is me in front of the mirror! My pubic area is swollen right now, I didn’t think about staying away from salty foods….like my fav….pretzels! I still have one drain in…1 came out 6 days post op…the output of the drain still in is around 70-80 ccs….my dr wants it to be no more than 30cc’s for the day! As far as I’m concerned….this was the best thing I have ever done for myself! :)

  27. jag says:

@caig….first day post op! I did it! Ues of course there is pain even with a pain pump and medication its major surgery but I kept reminding myself that this is WHAT I WANT after all the work outs and food plans I still couldn’t lose that five pounds in my baby belly.
But Cait is right! Be in your best shape you can. my p.s. was thrilled with how healthy I was :)
He was also super trust worthy and his bedside manner was superb… :)

I should also note to folks….he is using a more progressive technique that involves quilt-stitching the skin to the muscles that were to stitched. This new “no drains” technique is becoming more and more popular as it is safer in recovery, less pain, pain and faster healing….the only precaution :20 minutes longer under anesthesia …so ur homework….:)

  28. debra says:

Hi, I am a 41 yr old mother of 4 and am having surgery in three weeks. I work out about 3 times a week, sometimes more. I feel like I am in good shape. I wear a size 2 or 3 usually but my problem is that I have that extra skin under my belly button he called it a shelf and because I had such big babies, my belly button has stretch marks all around it. I am starting to think Juls Z is right. Reading these stories is starting to worry me.

I went to see my surgeon and I need a full tummy tuck to correct the problem that I have. The bigger problem is that I have stretch marks on the top and bottom of my belly button and I can’t stand the way that looks. I saw pictures of what it looks like after having your belly button restitched and it looks awful. I hear that your belly button will have a ring around it and the shape is obvious that you have had a tummy tuck. So when we talked he said the other option is to not cut around the belly button and pull the skin down but it will cause the top of my belly button to look like a frown and then the bottom will be stretched down a bit. So I don’t know which is worse.

The next biggest problem I have is that we have a trip to vegas scheduled 3 1/2 weeks after the surgery. The doctor says I am in good shape and should have no problem recovering but I don’t know. I am thinking being in a swimsuit will not be an option.

I am a fighter and hate to be down so I know I will push myself to recover as quickly as possible. I also know that I will be deligent with the post-op rules so that I don’t slow down the healing. I was wondering if after a couple of weeks if you would be able to take a diuretic to help with fluid retention. Anyone do that?

One last thing, did anyone get told that they shouldnt wear a bra the first few weeks so as not to constrict blood flow to the abdomen?

    :) Trying to stay postitive!!!

  29. jag says:

Debra—swimming isn’t an option usually until after the 4th week—that’s the typical advice. I am in my 3rd week post op and have had a great recovery. My belly button looks great and as time progresses, I’m encouraged that it will only be better! Lots of self-nurturing with scar and incision care—take it easy on yourself, fighter or not. Walking has been the best (and the toughest) exercise yet. Standing straight however, varies from person to person and doc-to-doc. I’m still not completely straight up—it takes a little time, as I’ve had extensive muscle repair and did the new-no-drains-op which is better, but “tighter” as it sutures the skin directly to the abdomen wall the entire length. better for healing, but like I mentioned, “tighter” :) I expect to be about 95% by the 6th week—and I’m a typical-workout-alot-eat fairly well-to-do mom of two. I completely believe the choice in dr. and my health and frame of mind had everything to do with it- Positive, positive-positive! :) –but very realistic! Good Luck!

omg I’m so sad…. everything was going perfect the first 7 weeks then after that the huge bump of my hernia just came back my tummy is so so big even bigger than before that I just can’t wear any jeans unles I buy new ones which is not an option, I have to wear my workout pants not even shorts since the body garment is long and it will show it not nice :( my doctor says I’m still swollen but you feel it yourself I don’t think so is just like water on my lower abdomen is not going anywhere its water or fat so I’m so so sad
of course everybody is different and I’m not trying to make anybody feels bad is just I need to say what I feel inside :(

  31. nellie says:

hi guys, I am 5 weeks into my TT and have been on a huge rollarcoaster of emotions. I stayed in hospital for 2 days, drainage tubes removed before I left and an extremely uncomfortable two and a half hour drive home. Had home nurses come to see me 1 day after getting home and knew I was in trouble. Had problems breathing and as it turns out had a major infection. Ended up back in our local hospital and my amazing Dr syringed the infection from my tummy in hope that the wound wouldn’t burst open. Was placed on 2 iv antibiotics and syringed on a daily basis. Without his quick thinking i would hate to think of what would have happened. 3 wks of antibiotics and the infection has gone. I tell people that a TT doesnt hurt so much its just the things that can go wrong afterwards that you need to be aware of. The pains in the back and ribs from not straightening, the pulling in the tummy, THE SWELLING SEEMS NEVER ENDING, and the frustration of not being able to do much is just as bad as the pain. Would I recommend it to anyone…yes, but be aware that things can go wrong and that you cant resume you ‘life’ for a few weeks after, and that can really get you down..depression is very common so they tell me. I guess I was that unhappy before otherwise it would never have got done, so im taking each day at a time and it does get easier and i cant wait to see the new me by summer.

    Hello All,

This is Day 3 after my tummy tuck and I actually feel pretty ok. I found the website makemeheal.com and I ordered their healing vitamins as well as SinEcch (helps reduce bruising and swelling), a hot/cold compress, scar sheet/scar gel and a stage 2 compression garment. I honestly think the healing vitamins made all the difference. I am actually standing almost upright and havent felt the need to take pain medication today. My friends and my boyfriend have been taking wonderful care of me. Having a great support system makes each day go by easier. There will be soreness but it’s not unbearable pain or anything. I was nervous but after having my daughter I was determined to succeed and you can too!!

I’m 5 weeks and 1 day post TT with breast aug and return to work 1 month later….yes went through emotions and occasional depression questioning myself why I did this, but saw my PS today and he states I’m healing beautifully and that in 1 more week, I am not limited at all to any type of exercise, swim and etc…I guess mentally I was more afraid that the stitches would open if I walked too fast or slept on my side and etc.., but I followed my PS instructions down to the T because I didn’t want anything to jeopardize my recovery. Make sure you have support 24/7 for at least 1 full week as you’ll need his/her support to wipe your butt when you go bathroom, wear your binder 24/7 except to shower, don’t put salt when making your food to help reduce swellling, low sodium, no caffein, walk as much as you can tolerate it to prevent blood clots, get the pain pump it’s worth it, sleep on your back, watch lots of comedy movies for lots of laughter as it helps with depression, need heating pad for your lower back, other than that I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY AS I’M FLAT AS A BOARD WITH MINOR SWELLING, BUT YES IT’S WORTH IT AND YES I WILL DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN IF YOU ASK ME THIS QUESTION….I LOOK HOT HOT HOT

I am just 4 weeks post op from a TT, lipo and breast augmentation, still pretty swollen on the lower abdomen and breast. I still have one drain in and just as I think the fluid is getting low enough to have it removed, I do too much and the fluid is back up again. I really want this thing out! I too have tried to get into my jeans. Even tho my tummy is really much flatter, I can’t button them yet. Frustrating! I know it will all come in time. I really underestimated the amount of time this would take to start to feel normal again, but I am in my 50s now. All in all I am happy I did it and would do it again. Can’t wait to wear a swimsuit next summer and not worry about hiding my tire.

  35. Kim says:

I am 5 weeks post TT and I’m extremely disappointed in those posters who have insinuated that those who have had problems didn’t follow instructions or perhaps are spreading horror stories to scare others, how presumptous of you.
My TT was anything but routine and I have followed ALL instructions. First, I hemorraghed post surgery, BP crashed and I almost died. ICU, four units of blood, and 5 days in the hosp and I finally went home.
Drains stayed for 3 weeks draining all the old blood from when I bled out, I never got the fluid so many talk about.
Was 4 weeks out, I got a 3 inch wound separation, not because I did something wrong, but because I developed a bladder infection and the swelling of the bladder caused the separation.
Have slept in a recliner for weeks, when I can sleep, I’m only averging 2-4 hours a day since I can’t seem to get used to sleeping on my back.
I look like I’m pregnant, flat underneath scar, pouchy above it all the way up.
Due to all the issues, only allowed three real showers.
I’m miserable, my husband is about ready to walk and I wish someone would just put me in a coma and wake me up when its all over.
While I’m thankful that most have sailed through the surgery, not everyone does and the risks are real.
Would I do it again, HELL NO, if you asked me today, ask me again in 6 months when I wake up!

  36. Shelby Miami says:

Well I’m scheduled for surgery tomorrow and I’m totally freaking out! I had read so many internet reviews and most were positive with the same types of complaints but here I have read horrible reviews so much so I want to call off the surgery!

  37. Vero says:

I am 10 weeks post TT, breast augmentation and lipo. I was also happy with the results the first two weeks. It seems that the more time goes by, the more my stomach swells, my stomach is hard but I still see a little bump, I have had seroma extracted twice. I am just so frustrated because my stomach does not look completely flat. My surgeon asked me to give it 3 to 6 months. I guess I was expecting to see results immediately. I have googled before and after photos but wonder how long post surgery these photos are taken to show results. Any advise?

  38. Kim says:

I am so sorry to hear the suffering some of you have been through. I hope your results improve!

I’m 3 1/2 weeks PO from full tummy tuck, muscle tightening and lipo. At two weeks I was able to walk 2 miles at a time (my normal is 4) and I’m still working on my stamina. Standing up straight has just recently become possible 24/7 (before in the evenings I’d start to hunch.) Last Sat. I was able to go to a wedding and actually dance!

My surgeon doesn’t believe in compression garments so that worried me a little until I found others online who said the same. I was pretty swollen and still had 8 lbs. of fluid one week out but my stomach is completely flat (and has been from 11 days out) with the exception of where he did the lipo on the flanks. I noticed today that the numbness has left my upper abdomen.

I haven’t been afflicted with the swelling some talk about (hope that’s not still to come!) but I have lost 9 pounds since surgery so my clothes are all too big at this point.

This is my second TT–I had one 20+ years ago but hit thyroid problems 7 years ago and struggled with the weight until they got it under control. Gained *flab* I wanted to be rid of and so far so good.

In neither TT did I run into the problems some are having. Am hoping you all bounce back soon. I can say from experience the long term results are well worth it.

  39. Mell says:

It has been 3 weeks for me since my TT surgery, am finally feeling like a human again and did really question my decision last week if i had done the right thing.

I did feel last week that i was more swollen that after the inital operation but have been informed that this is the norm and your tummy can swell and then go back down for the next 12 months and that i wont see the full results until then.
My doctor has told me to wear my garmet for 8 weeks to keep the swelling down and i think now she is right after seeing the concern of others when removing their’s after only 3.
She has also (the doctor) advised me to do nothing other than walking for 7 weeks and on week 8 to enter into some moderated abdominal excercise to redefine my midsection.
I am feeling much more positive this week and can def. notice a huge change in my figure.
At the moment i am doing everything i am told as have been warned it can put the healing back months if you try to do too much, frustrating as it is to look at the washing, ironing etc, i have decided that to go through the pain and not to mention cost of this op. would be silly to push myself for the sake of a few chores around the house. The house will survive and i will a figure that will make me more confident and be the outgoing person i once was before the c sections that took it all away from me.
Good luck and keep your spirits high, think long term and not 3 weeks, im sure it will be worth it.

  40. Jen says:

I am 12 weeks post opp and had both tummy tuck and a breast augmentation. I am 38 years old and in good shape. Would I do this again…YES! I am still healing…YES! It takes time.

I have completely healed from the breast augmentation and that was a walk in the park compared to the tummy tuck. I still feel sharp pains in my abdominal area and I highly suggest taking it easy (very easy) for the first 8 weeks.

For exercise, I walk, jog lightly and play tennis. I can do some lifting, but I still can’t do a sit up. I feel sharp pain when that happens and I understand it can take a full year to completely heal.

I also never changed pant size. Everything just fits better and I feel more confident now that the “front-butt” is gone.

A few people wrote that you have to think long term for the healing and just remember is gets better everyday. I really agree with this. Don’t be hard on yourself if you are not out jogging and swimming after 6 weeks. Your body just went thru a lot! Let it heal and we are all different and will experience different rates of healing as well.

For example, my sister had a breast augmentation and could not even open a juice jar a week after. I could open and do everything with my hands the DAY after. We are all different.

I admit it has been frustrating to not be able to work out my stomach yet because I want to keep my new stomach. Anyone who goes thru this knows how hard it is and I want to keep my results and know that all that pain wasn’t for nothing. Good luck and remember, one day at a time!

  41. Andrea says:

I am 3 weeks, 2 days post op. I had breast augmentation, large umbilical hernia, muscle tightening, some lipo and TT. 38 years old, 3 teens, good shape (ran 3-8 miles, 3-5 times a week). My biggest complaint is that I was never told the truth about how painful, how long the recovery and how long it would be to get back to running… so I wasn’t prepared. If I had known, then I would have expected all of this. I am healing well (my Dr. says), I have not had any major setbacks and I LOVE my boobies:) But I am really struggling with frustration, negativity, and lack of mobility – not to mention the inability to RUN! I asked him how long and he said (like the paragraph at the top of the page), “everyone is different, you will be back to your normal routine in 1-4 weeks”. Bull Crap! I just wish I had read this blog first so I would have been prepared!

I am still not standing straight and like most ladies on here, I am straighter in the morning. My muscles spasm and pull tight at random. I can’t fit into my clothes because it hurts and the little babydoll dresses look funny being that I look like a hobbit, lol. I am used to running and moving and dancing and I don’t stop during the day… so to find out that it will probably be several more months before I am back to my normal… is beyond frustrating for me :(

Did I mention I love my Boobies? I do – that was easy and wayyyyy worth it! I needed my belly button done, but I’m not sure all of this is worth the other – but we will see! My girlfriend had it done and her belly was SOOOO scarred and she had lots of skin from 3 c-sect, so hers was well worth it and she says she would do it again (she is 2 years post op). She admitted it was hell for her also.

I really enjoyed reading all of the comments – I don’t feel alone, so this is my story (negative or not) – hope it helps someone in someway:)

…here’s to looking fabulous by next summer!

I am 6 days out of post op from a breast lift and a tummy tuck, my PS told me the risks and also said i would be moving slow for about 2-3 weeks. What you call pain i had none because of the pain pump, (i truely recomend it, a must) only felt uncomfterble feelings, as if i had done sit ups non stop. My boobs dont hurt only feel like a deep paper cut burning feeling but just for the first two days. As for the tummy tuck 1st day was hard didnt sleep at all after getting from the hospital, didnt even sleep at night till the next morning about 9 am. Yes everything you do to your body is painful, some have more pain tolorence then others. I for one am a chicken for pain but with the pain pump it hasnt been too bad as of yet. Yes others will have terrible experinces, others wont, how ever its your body and your the only one that knows how much pain your body can handle. I looked at videos, listened to different stories some good, some bad, but this is what i wanted. how painful it would be was my desission and emotions where also a second thought but like i said i wamted it. My PS told me i could get depressed the first weeks because of the swollen, bruises and the taking it slow. He was great he listened to what i wanted not what his wallet wanted. The day of the surgery he spoked to me, held my hand looked at me how nervous i was getting looked at my husband and i and said it will be okay. He called me that same night, asked how i was and said tp call him if i neefed anything. it was a must to take off work two weeks. Said he was there to help me and he was very honest there are i asked about my arms a little wobble but said there are body parts we just need to work out on then just go get lipo, that made me feel that i was his patient not just money, he said in time you will see progress and feel it too. I tryed my jeans felt the same but without the donut sticking out or the bottom of my tummy looking like two cushions ..lol.. i looked flat and that is what i wanted……i am very happy now, cant wait to see what the progress will be after all the swolleness goes down….feeling tired is normal as my PS said, but i was more afraid of the pain after then the actual surgery, thank god i didnt feel none, like i said before i have no pain tolorence so i was surprised i didnt have none, pain pump a must…..i havent seen the whole out come but so far im happy i havent been this flat tummy since high school and i am 35 now. I have a 15, a 11 and a two year old, pregnancys were huge, but they see hoe exited i am, and they are also for me…..would i do this again YES….sorry but my experence wasnt so bad….thanks for listening

Hi everyone my name is Jenny. I am 5 month post surgery April 13th. I had the full mommy makeover. The breast augmentation felt as though my milk came in for the first time since birth and I was engorged. I did feel a lot of pain in my arms when I would try to lift them or use them in any way. I also got lipo inner thighs, outer thighs, flanks, bra line and the tummy tuck with reconstruction. I went through the tummyfor the breast job so I had no incisions to cause pain. I did however have tons on my back and back legs and inner thighs. It was hard for 6 full weeks. I could be home with my little boys because the guilt overcame me. I wanted to pick up andc hold my 18 month old.. which u can’t…as well as everything that I did before I want to do again . Mostly just be a mom again. That was the hardest part was depending on others to do literally everything. Right now I have been feeling like some of you. Sort of in happy that I seem bigger then at my 3 month stage. But I did stop wearing the garments all the time just maybe half days or every other day. I did go from 163lbs at surgery to 138 at 3 months. Now everyday its different. But I seem to be always between 142-148lbs. I did go from size 10 to 0/1 but now I’m 3/4 not complaining because with 700 cc at 5′2 I don’t want to be boobs on a stick. I started working out last week and I see my six pack already. I can’t feel the skin by touch still. I also seem to feel some sort of kicking or movements inside. is this normal??? Also, I did end up with a left side ear tag or extra skin by the Tt. it did not happen to thud right side rotfl

The Dr. Said he will fix the left side at a year. I can’t run or jump yet. I can finally pick up my baby for a little bit. But if I hold him on my hips too long or on my tummy, I swell very very badly. The shooting pains are always there unless I stretch or go to the gym. I have tried massages, baths, and hot tubs and it seems to worsen my nerve pain. My husband love my new body. He tells me everyday. I love the fact that I don’t have to hide my flap rolls anymore and wear lose fitting clothes. I now buy form fitting clothes that I didn’t even wear before I had my boys. I would do it all over again but the one thing I would’ve changed is waiting until my baby was 3 and didn’t need to be carried. And I would have hired a home nanny to help do my duties. To this day I look down and can’t believe my tummy is no longer there, and now I have a stomach. Yeah to all of you. Tough it out its voodoo worth it. :o

Stupid phone. Not voodoo. Soooooo worth it. Ps. buy some one size fits all lace thong panties from victorias secret.3/30 and they don’t dig into your incision. And the top lace of the thong covers the scar line perfectly. And if your a DD full coverage is cute with all patterns and fits perfect.

Hi. I am Rose. Had my TT on 8/26. First week: Took pain medicine every 8 hours and needed help to get on recliner, go to the bathroom etc. Drank a gallon of water every day and started a diet of fruits, vegetables, salads. First massage. Band too tight? Had some blisters. Second week: Hated the drains…stiches pulled on my skin. They were removed on day 10 post surgery. Continued with water and eating healthy. Massage two and three. Third week: More independent still swollen. Massage four and five. Fourth week: Back to work. still hanched over some. Lost 6 pounds since tt due to healthy diet. Doctor says I am healing well. Blisters are taking longer to heal. Love love my tt results. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone, I am Michelle. I am 4 weeks post op today. Still very swollen, unable to rest as I cannot get comfortable and still hunched over a bit and still have pain on both sides of my stomach. I called my ps nurse and she said I should not be having pain however she did not want me to come on to make sure all is healing properly. Needless to say, I feel very alone and not very optimistic about recovery or my results. Anyone have any input?
    Thank you

Hi, I am about 3 and a half weeks post op. I am feeling great, the first couple of days were the worst but the pAin meds helped me out incredibly. The second week I was sore and tired easily also I felt very puffy. I took out salty foods from my diet and drink lots of water and tea to help with the puffiness. Also, going through surgery can make you feel very vulnerable, my emotions went up for the first two weeks. Make sure to give yourself some praise, and give yourself time to heal. I’ll be going for my post op on friday, also wear your support band it helps with the swelling greatly! Good luck girls!

  47. MAS says:

    Dear S,

Your docutor sounds like a toal #@&%@# !!! what a fool to push you like that and have the nerve to tell you that he made you beautiful after being ugly. He needs more than a bedside manner.
My doc is no softie either, but he said to take it easy the whole first week, then try to walk as much as i felt i can without straining myself the second week, and try to get as back to normal as i can by the third. He did say drinking water and very lightly massaging the area (light circular movement with a flat hand so no pressure points) was important.

Overall i think its important to note what was done during the tuck (skin tuck only, muscles tightening too? and lipo?) , and that that could be one of the main reasons why people recover differently in addition to healing being different form person to person.

The thing I agree with is that i did NOT expect this level of swelling am now at week 3 and do not fit into my pre-op pants. very frustrating. Having read comments above, i feel better knowing its normal, and will make it a point to drink and walk more to hopefully help things along.

Hi, it’s been exactly 4 weeks since my tummy tuck had been done. I am so thrilled that i finally got rid of all that extra skin and fat, it’s been a long 9 years of waiting. I felt better after the 3rd week but still taking it easy. I just hope it turns out the way it should. When i look at my tummy, it looks like the buldge is still there but i remind myself to continue focusing on my recovery.

  49. Lynn says:

Hi everyone,I am at 2 weeks post opp TT having just read all the comments, we seem to have done this for a reason, and that is to look better then we did, we all excepted a quick fix, instant slim, flat stomach look, including myself , the way I look at it is if we trust our doctor who did the TT , we will be happy with the way we look, I have to remind myself how many years it took me to get my body looking like it did before the surgery, patients is the key.. Good luck to you all xx

Thank you so much for sharing it has helped me soo much. Good luck and take care ladies
